Argentinos Juniors player Luciano Sanchez suffered a serious injury to his left knee as a result of harsh interference from Brazilian Fluminense player Marcelo during the match of the two teams, Tuesday, in the Copa Libertadores tournament.
Dos Marcelo, on Sanchez’s knee with his full weight, caused a detachment in the joint and bent the leg back horribly, which called for an ambulance and the player was taken out on a stretcher from the field.
The attending physician Alejandro Ronconi confirmed that Sanchez will undergo several surgeries and needs 10 to 12 months to recover, noting that he has not witnessed such a serious injury in 23 years of practicing medicine.
Marcelo apologized through a post, wishing Sanchez a speedy recovery, while Argentinos responded by saying “We are adversaries, not enemies,” thanking Marcelo for his concern about the incident.
The match between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw, and they meet again next week in the second leg of the round of 16 of the championship.
